Labour minister promises action against non-compliant employers

4 May 2020

JOHANNESBURG – Labour inspectors say a risk assessment must be done at vulnerable workplaces and if social distancing can’t be implemented, alternative plans must be made.

Around 1,5-million-people will return to work from Monday under eased lockdown restrictions.

Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi said employers who don’t comply with COVID-19 hygiene protocol face jail time or hefty fines.

Saftu General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi said there are massive challenges facing officials moderating this process.

Vavi said the resources available to the Department of Labour are not sufficient to monitor and assess all the workplaces that will be opened.
